Best way to bleach hair to a light brown?

I have medium brown hair with unwanted red tones. I'd like to lighten it to a very light golden or neutral brown (no red tones). What's the best way to bleach and tone it?

I want to do this myself and avoid the salon - there are no good colorists nearby so i'd be wasting my time and money, believe me.

I would drive to a good salon to get my hair done well and not risk the chance of doing it myself and damaging it then trying to find remedies to get it healthy again. Its your hair, its worth a drive I am sure .....

Go to a salon!!! Don't even think about trying to do it yourself... I made that mistake in high school and completely fried my (med-light brn) hair. Bleaching is difficult...leave it to the professionals!
